About us
AMARÁ is a rescue of ancestral roots, Natural Dyeing. The alchemy of color through Nature. The essence of creating colors from bark, roots, plants, leaves, flowers or berries. The plurality of nature through its colors.
From earth to pigment. From pigment to earth.
A manifesto that the present is to assume our responsibility, act ethically and transparently in production, choose and have a positive impact. The present is about respect and care for Nature and People, to ensure the continuity of a future, of this place that we call our great home.
I'm Raquel Amaral, the designer, seamstress and dyer at AMARÁ.
I graduated in Equipment Design at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon, I trained in the area of Product Sustainability - Life Cycle Assessment and Eco-Design Strategies and at a certain point, I decided to take a course in Graphic Design .
But life, which aligns us with our purpose, took me to Natural Dyeing. When I was 21, they had to remove my thyroid due to carcinoma. At the time I made big changes to my diet, I reinforced my use of natural and organic cosmetics and I started looking for ecological products for my daily life. I did a lot of research on the topic of thyroid tumors and dysfunctions, and there was a term that caught my attention - endocrine disruptors (they are chemical substances that interfere with our hormonal system, they are associated with various health problems, including hormonal disorders, infertility, cancer, dysfunctions in the reproductive system, metabolic disorders, developmental problems and damage to the immune system. In addition to affecting our health, they negatively affect the environment). These disruptors are present in dyes and synthetic fabrics - my question - 'What do you mean? Could the clothes I wear have been one of the causes of my tumor?' - I eliminated all synthetic fabrics from my closet, which were actually few, I always felt better with natural fabrics. I started researching alternatives to synthetic dyes and ended up with Natural Dyeing, I did some training to later create AMARÁ, where I can put my knowledge, experience, values and my purpose of doing something with a positive impact on People and the environment.
